This blog is inspired by the trials of starting a band, choosing a name, and booking gigs… It’s very similar to being in any relationship… it starts out casual like a mountain bike ride and a coffee, or in this case, a casual jam, playing a few tunes, having a beer, and some fun… As you get into it, you start asking, “how much time do i want to spend playing these songs? do we all get along? and am I good enough?… then booking gigs… haggling with bar managers, begging for a platform to make tips… etc… It reminds one of the daily grind of a love-relationship… “did you buy laundry detergent, and who got the dog out? ” Where is that smart hottie with whom I shared that latte? And that fun talented singer who jammed out on my original song and made it sound like it belonged on the radio…? Well…. they are still right there!!!!! That spark is always in reach, and the important part of any relationship whether it be Lover, Work Associate, Friend, Family, Teammate or Bandmate, is that age-old remedy… BEER. haha… only partially kidding though. Of course, just being willing to talk it out, hug it out, shake if off, whatever methods you’all use to get back to that thrilling experience of seeing the other person’s beauty again. Don’t let it fester, and don’t give up! It’s easy, just practice. Love you all! Oh, and HEY HEY WE’RE THE… ?? Tune in next week… we just might have a name:)
Hey Hey Hey!!! By launching my music career at 49 1/2 I am standing up for old people everywhere!!! I have been playing for a while now… BUT!!! …now is the time for making moves…the time to say “YES” to travel, to gigs, to writing every day, to practicing with a metronome more.
Putting ones self into a category based upon our age limits our potential. Why don’t we add a 10 pound weight to one ankle at the beginning of a race? Uhh… it would be stupid? duh… But we do similar things with our thoughts and actions.
If a gymnast was to begin training at age 3, and learn, train, and compete for 15 years, they would be good in 5 years, great in 10, and probably finished by 15 years. It would be time well spent on honing the body, coordination, and then you could apply that to other endeavors.
If you are any age, and want to do something new, just think about the fact that you not only could be good in 5 years, great in 10 and finished in 15 and it would be time well spent, but you also probably have already done this “learning curve exercise” for other things if you played sports as a child, or worked at school, or learned a job. It should be FASTER now to go through it again, with a different endeavor BUT THE SAME PRINCIPLES! Don’t listen to anyone who says it’s too late, or that it will take too long… HOG WASH!
Please let me know how you’re doing!!!
Winter of 2014/15 is kicking me into the new world of blogging, linking, and uploading music. Although I can still remember getting up off the couch to TURN OVER THE RECORD, and placing the needle where I wanted to listen,.... I am embracing the ease of the new world. I recently recorded an EP with my dad at Studio Alf in Portland, OR, and it is raw and ready for a listen. Just me, and "the goddess"... My jumbo gibson... no punches, one time through. Eileen Bailey danced through much of the recording of it! It is a pretty big contrast to my first effort in 2008, "Making the Mantle" which was a fully produced CD, with fabulous musicians filling out my sound. It can be purchased on iTunes if you are so inclined. Listen to the EP here!! Please contact me if you want to "share the stoke" of life, and collaborate on a tune, or gig together. Love, love, love.... wstar
